As a person with a TBI, I found this book very relatable and highlighted a good portion of it! Kara's story is powerful and very common for TBI survivors. However, each chapter is written as its own entity without a linear perspective. As long as you go into the book knowing that, it is an easy read. In addition, the author includes a whole section at the end with writings from her various treatment team members which included excellent recommendations. I purchased this book used from a third party seller, it was in great condition as it is out of print.

I read this book while first recovering, and liked it so much I passed it around, bought extras and gave them to people-both TBI patients and family members. It is written in a humorous and easy way to follow and full of really wonderful information.
When it came out on I purchased it as well, and have continued to encourage people to read it. Since each chapter has notations from 'TEAM KARA' (the medical team assisting the writer) it truly is a 'full spectrum' educational tool.

Wonderful Read!
I found this book to be informative about what one may be dealing with TBI (traumatic brain injury). I don't envy Kara's or anyone else who is going through this situation. I read this book because it was selected for my book club, but really I read it because one of my good friends is going through a similar journey. I hope that just as Kara was able to make progress, that my friend can too.
I recently reconnected with a very dear friend from many years back. I was aware that they had suffered a traumatic brain injury in an automobile accident a couple of years ago. Still, upon meeting them again, all looked and sounded normal from the exterior. How wrong I was! I simply could not comprehend the extensive and disabling effects of the TBI nor the painfully slow rebuilding of self until I read this book. I just so wish I had known of the book and read it two years back.
My father-in-law was involved in an accident and sustained a TBI. As I usually do I grabbed books to try to understand what he was going through. This book was written by a TBI survivor and she wrote in what I would consider a "light" style. She gave real life account of what she was/is going through and how she is dealing with it. I would suggest this book to caregivers of TBI patients. Even though every case is different, this book would give you an idea of some of the things to look for and some possible solutions.
Seriously, I love it! The TBI community as a whole is amazing anyway, but this book was exactly what I needed. I found myself highlighting huge chunks of text because someone finally, FINALLY understood!

"And others didn’t understand. How could they? They couldn’t see the hundred and one things I was doing behind the scenes to present myself as normal. I looked the same (except for the extra poundage). I didn’t talk on the phone or entertain guests when my speech was really bad or my head was breaking concrete. I nodded through conversations. I was scared to admit to myself, much less to them, that things were really wrong. I still felt that “mild” meant minor and that I was a failure, somehow, for not being better by then."

Perfect. Exactly what I had been going through, doing my best to appear "normal" then being surprised when everyone thought I was. When everyone said "That's just getting older; it happens to everyone" even though I was still in my 40s.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who has had a brain injury or loves someone that has. I read he version, but I will most likely buy hard copies to give to my mom and my boyfriend.
Nice testimony with a decent balance of issues. I wish there were more books like this because there are so many people (including myself) that are living with a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury).

Imagine just the number of soldiers that must manage life with a different brain and all those that live, love and interact with a person that may look the same but isn't. Awareness is helpful but sympathy is not required (in my opinion).

Thank you Kara Swanson and I pray you're doing well
