This is a gem among so many Warhammer 40K novels. The setting is very grimdark. In short, and with no spoilers, you have an Imperial world that is beset by a Necron reawakening and the Death Corp of Krieg are assigned to investigate. The squaring off of these forces and those caught in their crossfire make for a compelling read.
If you enjoy either faction or the 40K universe in general you will enjoy this novel. Happy reading!

Dead Men Walking Steve Lyons 9781849700115 Books Reviews
Not terrible, but just know that the story kinda falls apart at the end. Characters and plots jump around a bit and a few times I had to go back to make sure I didn't miss a chapter or two to explain why characters were doing what they were doing. So while I wouldn't call this a bad read, I would say I doubt i'll ever read it again.
Decent 40k book, was a bit scattered and random at times but was nice to get some DKOK lore in,
Good insight not only into Krieg soldiers but also how Necrons came into view for the distant future.
I bought this book because I was looking for something that involved the Necron. This definitely has that, and tells the story of various interesting characters with different backgrounds. Would reccomend for any fan of Warhammer 40K, or even those looking for a gritty, almost horror sort of novel.
I perused for other books author had written for Black Library-- both of his previous books (2) also dealt with Imperial Guard. I like this book better than his last books because it dealt with the issue of collateral damage in the Warhammer 40K universe the impact on humans in science fiction warfare. The limitations of the Imperium were also discussed in the book. I enjoyed the book as I had not read a Black Library book for 6 months. "Dead Men Walking" is the author's latest and best contribution to the Black Library.
What I would like to have read is more background story for the Krieg regiments. It must have been difficult for the author to write such a story when all the character's names are numbers, so I understand author's difficulties in writing bleaker fiction (it's been tried before, rarely do such works attain "classics" status-- but, hey, this book is Black Library at it's near finest).
I would consider this book "Hammer Slammer's (David Drake) Light"-- good stuff, yet there's more civvies and their hurt feelings than a typical, combatants-only, Black Library book.
I look forward to author's contribution to Horus Heresy series-- if he's ever given the chance. The author is not (Dan Abnett)-quality in writing, but I'm willing and waiting to fork over money to read what he'll create next for Black Library.
The best grimdark book I've read. The book captures the 40k tagline that ends the one page intro to every 40k product "It is the 41st millenium. ... <snip several paragraphs about the Emperor and Imperium of Man> ... Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods."
The Ciaphas Cain series is funny and heroic. The Gaunt's Ghosts' series is tragic, heroic and a bit of a letdown (Gaunt should be running the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, not drifting down into obscurity). The various Space Marine series and books are heroic fantasies, some dark, some bloody, some funny, some hopeful, but usually some mixture of each. Eisenhorn is great, Ravenor should have stuck to writing books, although Eisenhorn's former followers carry a lot of the book and the meeting with Eisenhorn was worth the price of the omnibus.
This book is nothing but grim darkness from A to B. There is heroism. There is strife. There is cold blooded calculation. There is glory. There is sacrifice. There is unswerving devotion. All in service to the Emperor and all of it rational and cold. The ending is appropriate for that "grim dark future" and gives the coined word grimdark its true meaning. In the end, all that matters is that service to the Emperor. Win, lose or draw. All that matters is serving the Emperor, no matter the cost.
If you aren't ready for the real darkness, stay with Ciaphas Cain or the Space Wolves.
I gotta be honest, this book was nothing like I had expected. I expected an action adventure with the grim Krieg guardsmen against the undying necrons.
Well, I didn't exactly get that. What I did get was an insight into what grim dark really is all about. It's when something terrible happens and you can't do anything about it. It's when things are so dark that you can't even see a light at the end of it all. It's when despite all your struggles, all your sacrifices and everything and everyone you've lost you still don't get an happy ending.
Happy endings are for fairytales and this ain't no bedtime story.
Welcome to Warhammer 40.000.
